Amazingly enough, it was six years ago today that I wrote a blog entry about experimenting with and utterly loathing WordPress as a possible blogging platform and an early alternative to TypePad.
Since that time, and due to my overall (and growing) dissatisfaction with TypePad, I have occasionally experimented with Blogger (three times), Squarespace (once), the free version of WordPress (three times), and even the hosted version of WordPress (twice). In the end, I have continued to return to TypePad. Not because I can't let go, but because I have certain expectations for revitalising this blog and nothing - thus far - has been an adequate answer.
I'm not overly fond of dumping vast amounts of time and energy into making a dramatic change and then not being able to get the results I want and, honestly, if it doesn't make me happy, why bother?
Whilst this wretched term at university has been consuming much of my waking life, I decided to give WordPress one last go. And I'm talking about the hosted variety, not the free thing at Wordpress.com - because despite the mystical lure of the word 'free,' it really isn't that. Not if you want to make it truly functional. WordPress.com want to charge a user for add-ons and extras, which I imagine is how they stay in business, but the end result is that I would have paid more per month for a 'free' WordPress site than I currently spend on TypePad. And I still wouldn't have all the functionality I desired or currently have.
Even Blogger, with their new design, somehow feels more restrictive than they did in the past, although they do have some interesting new template design functionality. I still wasn't sold on them, though.
Anyway, the point is this: in a few weeks, I will be relaunching this blog at it's new home on a hosted WordPress site. It was rather an irritating struggle for me because WordPress software is heavily code-oriented and I am not, but my friend and helper - who was determined to bring this blog with 'some fucked up confusing name' into the verdant world of WordPress and free me from the oppression of TypePad - is promising me that things will be finished in reasonably short order.
Since October of last year we bandied about a half dozen design ideas, cast them in the bin, began again, and cast those ideas in the bin as well. Finally - finally - I decided on a template and a format I could live with.
So... I'll post the link here fairly soon. There will be some changes, to be sure, and some kinks to sort out, but I think they'll be for the best. The site will, I hope, be finalised in about a month - possibly sooner - so check back if you're interested.
